Mundelein, Illinois


  The Village of Mundelein along with the Illinois Commerce Commission installed nine Automated Horn Systems in September of 2001 to help alleviate the noise pollution generated by the increased train traffic through their community. The Canadian National Railway and the METRA commuter line run approximately 40 trains through Mundelein daily. Under the guidance of the Federal Railroad Administration, Northwestern University Center for Public Safety conducted a study to determine the effectiveness of the Automated Horn System as a safety device and as a method of noise reduction for the surrounding community. The study concluded that the AHS reduced gate violations (motorist drive around downed crossing gates) at the highway-rail grade crossings by 70%. The report also stated that with the installation of the AHS noise pollution was decreased by 86%!
